Razzil Darkbrew, the Alchemist, is a melee strength hero whose alchemical prowess makes him a strange but versatile fighter. He is an unusual carry based upon transmuting fallen enemies into large amounts of bonus gold, with both an early game and late game presence due to his large health pool and the first strike nature of his spells. His low but balanced attributes and the sure promise of gold for items means he can be one of the most disparately built heroes in the game.

A well-equipped Alchemist can then use Alchemist chemical rage.pngChemical Rage to its fullest effect, as the incredible regeneration and base attack time reduction make it one of the best steroid abilities in the game.



The sacred science of Chymistry was a Darkbrew family tradition, but no Darkbrew had ever shown the kind of creativity, ambition, and recklessness of young Razzil. However, when adulthood came calling he pushed aside the family trade to try his hand at manufacturing gold through Alchemy. In an act of audacity befitting his reputation, Razzil announced he would transmute an entire mountain into gold. Following two decades of research and spending and preparation, he failed spectacularly, quickly finding himself imprisoned for the widespread destruction his experiment wrought. Yet Razzil was never one to take a setback lightly, and sought escape to continue his research. When his new cellmate turned out to be a fierce ogre, he found just the opportunity he needed. After convincing the ogre not to eat him, Razzil set about carefully concocting a tincture for it to drink, made from the moulds and mosses growing in the prison stone work. In a week's time, it seemed ready. When the ogre drank the potion, it flew into an unstoppable berserker rage, destroying the cell bars and exploding through walls and guards alike. They soon found themselves lost somewhere in the forest surrounding the city with a trail of wreckage in their wake and no signs of pursuit. In the tonic's afterglow, the ogre seemed serene, happy, and even eager. Resolving to work together, the pair set off to collect the materials needed to attempt Razzil's Alchemic transmutation once more.

Alchemist brews up an unstable concoction that he can throw at an enemy hero, to stun and deal damage in an area around the explosion. The longer the concoction brews, the more damage it deals and the longer the stun. After 5 seconds, the brew reaches its maximum damage and stun time. However, after 5.5 seconds, the concoction will explode on Alchemist himself if not thrown.

  • Alchemist can move and act normally while brewing.
  • A timer above Alchemist's head will indicate the remaining brew time. This timer is visible to enemies.
  • You can deny yourself with this skill.
  • Unstable Concoction cannot be disjointed.
  • Once thrown, Unstable Concoction stops brewing.

Alchemist synthesizes additional gold from his enemies and bounty runes. With each kill, Alchemist earns base bonus gold and extra bonus gold. If Alchemist kills another unit which yields gold within the next 30 seconds, an additional instance of Extra Bonus Gold is added to the total. Additionally, causes bounty runes to yield 2 times their normal gold.

Alchemist is one of the quickest farmers in Dota 2. He can out farm any enemy hero, even if he has the same number of killed creeps, or even if he’s amount is lower. Although our stats do not increase too much with leveling, he has huge attack speed, move speed, mana and health regeneration that in skilled hands makes him dangerous enemy.

Ability setup

Alchemist acid spray.pngAcid Spray — Despite all the pros of this spell it has one disadvantage – manacost. Don’t spam it if you won’t have the support that will restore your mana all the time

  • Acid Spray can be used on ancient creeps.
  • Mechanical units got their armor reduced but they do not get damage.

Alchemist unstable concoction.pngUnstable Concoction — Powerful spell that does huge amount of damage, and stuns everyone in radius of 175 from target. It works well with Dark seer vacuum.pngVacuum or Magnataur reverse polarity.pngReverse Polarity. Many experienced players will see as soon as we will start charging the barrel so better do it behind the tree or in fog of war etc.

  • This spell does physical damage. And this means that damage from it may be increased, by lowering enemy’s armor with Assault CuirassAssault Cuirass, Medallion of CourageMedallion of Courage.
  • With this ability we can kill yourself.
  • Time before Unstable Concoction (5.5 sec) will blow up is shown above Alchemist’s model.
  • This ability can be used with Shadow BladeShadow Blade, you can charge it right in front of enemy’s nose and stay invisible.
  • Even if you cancel this spell, this bolt will stun not only Alchemist, but all the enemies in small radius.
  • Not only allies but enemies that are near will hear we are charging our barrel and they will run away
  • Partly strikes through linken’s sphere and BKB, Linken’s sphere cannot block the AOE effect and BKB if it was activated during the flight of a barrel will counter the stun but not the damage

Alchemist goblins greed.pngGreevil's Greed — Goblin’s Greed makes us a great farmer, and gives us opportunity to race against Anti-MageAnti-Mage, Phantom LancerPhantom Lancer etc. 4 stacks in the camp of easy creeps can give us about 900 coins!

  • If you have low experience in last hitting, then do not learn this spell because gold multiplier should always be in use.
  • Bonus works when you kill creeps, heroes, wards, towers, summoned entities.
  • If you will keep the window of kills opened then you can have about 30 coins from every killed creep additional to the main sum.

Alchemist chemical rage.pngChemical Rage — The best ultimate for farmer. Because of low cooldown Chemical rage is our personal support, that restores HP and MP and also increases attack and move speed that gives even more farm.

  • During cast of Chemical Rage we can avoid stun.
  • Ultimate gives us a chance not to return to the base to restore HP/MP.
  • It will decrease the delay before the attack increasing the attack speed a lot
  • Cannot be cancelled with diffusal.

Early game

Early game for Alchemist (up to 15 minute)

First items: Quelling BladeQuelling Blade, Stout ShieldStout Shield, TangoTango

In the beginning alchemist is very weak and he has no escapes or nukes that’s why he needs support. The lane doesn’t matter because we should do the only thing – farm. And the number of supports does not matter as their goal is to guard us and stop enemy from farm. The more is better but we should have at least 1 support. Quelling blade needed because we need to farm more, and have our Greevil’s Greed multiplier opened easier. After we get 500 gold we should buy Gloves of HasteGloves of Haste that also will help to last hit. By the 8th minute we should have 1550 gold in our pocket to buy Hand of MidasHand of Midas. As soon as courier will bring us the item we should use it on the biggest creep and get money and needed experience.

Then after getting Power TreadsPower Treads we can go farm forest and leave the lane for our allies to earn gold and experience. By the 15th minute our farm should give us MaelstromMaelstrom that will increase your farm even more with lightning.

In professional games you may see supports stack ancients for the carry to farm. Alchemist works great for that because his spray reduces the armor and gives damage.

Middle game

Middle game for Alchemist (from 15 till 35 minute)

Most of the time the gameplay for alchemist is farm 40 minutes then go fight for the win so we still farm in midgame. Next item to get will be MjollnirMjollnir that will increase attack speed and will give us Static Charge spell that we may use on us if somebody attacks.

If we need we may go and fight before 40th minute and to do that we need to buy Skull BasherSkull Basher increasing our damage and getting 25% chance to stun the enemy for 1.4 seconds.

Alchemist is a hero who should hit with his hands and that means you need Black King BarBlack King Bar and use it in fights but only when it is needed because every time Avatar effect decreases per 1 second. By 35th minute we may buy Assault CuirassAssault Cuirass which will be useful for us and our team, giving the aura of additional speed and armor. By that time Hand of MidasHand of Midas will only be wasting a slot in your stash so you should sell it.

Late game

Late game for Alchemist (from 35 minute)

After 35 minute the game goes to final stage and we should get Monkey King BarMonkey King Bar and Abyssal BladeAbyssal Blade to be real carry. It will increase our damage and we will get True Strike effect, our weapon won’t miss anymore, and Bash ( stuns the enemy for 2 seconds) In some cases when additional damage and true strike won’t help you should better get fat by buying Heart of TarrasqueHeart of Tarrasque. This decision should be made right in game.

To win a teamfight we need to play our role well. Before the fight use Ultimate, BKB, charge your stun and go to fight. In team fight it will be useful to use acid on the enemy to reduce the armor and throw stun on the most dangerous enemy. As soon as we get close our huge attack speed and Bash effect won’t let the enemy a chance to survive.
