Mogul Khan, the Axe, is a melee strength hero, infamous for creating chaos in battle and thriving off of it.

Axe is commonly played as an initiator, as his potent disables can disrupt the enemy's formation and give his team openings in fights. Axe's fighting style demands that he gets up close and very personal, as he can taunt enemies into attacking him with Axe berserkers call.pngBerserker's Call, preventing them from engaging his teammates. Once he has the enemy's attention, he can counter those who strike him with a sweeping Axe counter helix.pngCounter Helix that slashes all enemies at melee range with pure damage. He also has a slow and damage-over-time nuke in Axe battle hunger.pngBattle Hunger, which can harass the enemy or force them to join in battle, while also slowing their movement speed and boosting his own. Finally, he has the ability to unconditionally remove weakened enemies from the battlefield if they are under a certain threshold with Axe culling blade.pngCulling Blade, while simultaneously boosting his allies' speed. A bloodthirsty and indomitable warrior, Axe's presence on the battlefield is felt by friend and foe alike, dominating the attention of the enemy wherever he goes.



As a grunt in the Army of Red Mist, Mogul Khan set his sights on the rank of Red Mist General. In battle after battle he proved his worth through gory deed. His rise through the ranks was helped by the fact that he never hesitated to decapitate a superior. Through the seven year Campaign of the Thousand Tarns, he distinguished himself in glorious carnage, his star of fame shining ever brighter, while the number of comrades in arms steadily dwindled. On the night of ultimate victory, Axe declared himself the new Red Mist General, and took on the ultimate title of 'Axe.' But his troops now numbered zero. Of course, many had died in battle, but a significant number had also fallen to Axe's blade. Needless to say, most soldiers now shun his leadership. But this matters not a whit to Axe, who knows that a one-man army is by far the best.

Axe is one of the most unique heroes of Dota2. This hero is great if you like to be active during early and mid game. He is very strong on lane, great for defending towers, and he is a deadly killer. Axe can be great initiator in team fights.

Ability setup

Axe berserkers call.pngBerserker's Call — One of the best spells to initiate fight, because the enemy doesn’t have choice he has to attack Axe. Smart use of Berserker's Call with other players will help you to win fights easily.

  • It works on invisible heroes and strikes through magic immunity.
  • Even if Axe will die, all the enemies who were hit by this spell will stay on their places.
  • If you use it with Axe counter helix.pngCounter Helix, then you can deal a lot of damage. You need to attract as much units as you can, thus Axe counter helix.pngCounter Helix will work more often.
  • You don’t have to stand on one place while using this spell, you may pull your enemies close to tower or allies.

Axe battle hunger.pngBattle Hunger — This spell works amazing on early game stage. If we have ally who will help us with mana, we can use this spell nonstop that will be a huge problem for enemies.

  • To cancel this debuff you should kill any kind of unit, or building, including Observer WardObserver Ward, Animal CourierAnimal Courier, Lanaya traps or Venomancer wards.
  • You should get Soul RingSoul Ring to burn the enemy to death
  • On lvl 4 with magic resist for 25% it does 360 damage! Think of it – 360 DAMAGE!
  • Use the burn on the enemies who already have Doom on them or other burning spells, cos you won’t be able to finish the hero.

Axe counter helix.pngCounter Helix — This spell gives you a great advantage before the melee heroes in the beginning, because only a psycho will attack Axe alone risking to get counter attack.

  • It works every time when attack is started, but not when Axe has been hit. Enemies can start and stop attack, provoking this spell to work, so they will push the line and be safe under the tower.
  • It uses no mana.
  • It works even during disables and has no animation.
  • This ability is our farm, nuke and 90% of line control.
  • Ability does a lot of damage on start but on later stages it became useless.
  • The chance of Counter Helix attack is not random but pseudo-random (it is a process that shows how spell works that has a chance to be activated). Instead of using the simple number like 25% spell works every 4th attack they introduced inconsistent number that will increase with each attack, and when spell is activated the number drops for its original amount. That is why the system is called not random but pseudo-random.

Axe culling blade.pngCulling Blade — It is one of the best spells to finish enemies, because as soon as enemy has lower that some specific percentage of health we can kill him instantly. Some people like to use this spell on creep before initiating the fight, because it will give speed to Axe and his allies.

  • If you will kill Night Stalker with this spell, Axe will say: “I SAID GOOD NIGHT STALKER!”
  • The Ultimate cannot be evaded;
  • It works through all the kinds of armor: BKB, link, Shallow Grave, Refraction, Spiked Carapace etc.
  • Do not steal all the possible kills especially from carry, because Axe is not that strong in late as damage dealers with money for those kills.

Early game

Early game for Axe (up to 15 minute)

First items: (Stout ShieldStout Shield, Ring of ProtectionRing of Protection, Healing SalveHealing Salve)

Axe, without a doubt can farm the forest, stacking the creeps, but if the have the opportunity to go on hard lane with one or two supports we will give a lot of help to our team. Axe has an ability to stand behind the tower and don’t let creeps to defend it, so tower will be pushed very fast. We should get Stout ShieldStout Shield and Ring of ProtectionRing of Protection to have more armor and healing salve to be able to heal in case something goes wrong.

If we have to play solo hard, then do not act very offensive and run too deep, only if the enemy is melee range (then counter Helix won’t let him hit you freely.)

If we play with support then we have nothing to be afraid of and we may go behind the towers. As enemies have no chance to last hit creeps you may use Axe battle hunger.pngBattle Hunger time to time and not let them to enter a fight.

While creeps will push T1 tower by the 4-5 minute we will be able to go and farm forest to buy Dagger. By that time saved money should be enough to buy Tranquil BootsTranquil Boots.

Blink DaggerBlink Dagger is a key item for us. So it should be bought right after Tranquil. It is easy to do in forest, just make yourself couple of double spawns, put your Tranquil boots on the ground so they will be active right away and farm those neutrals.

With dagger we should try to use it right away and gank some lane.

Middle game

Middle game for Axe (Mogul Khan) (from 15 till 35 minute)

Our hero depends on his items cos you should tank a lot of damage and you have to think of your armor. VanguardVanguard is a great shield that protects us from the most fierce attacks.

Axe is not a farmer so we should not steal farm from our teammates but run across the map (roaming) and try to kill more enemies.

By the minute 25 we should get very useful Blade MailBlade Mail, it’s active Damage return combined with Axe berserkers call.pngBerserker's Call will make our enemies suffer. You also may use Damage Return during your retreat, so enemy will think twice before hitting our spiked back.

In 6.81 version Valve increased Aghanim's ScepterAghanim's Scepter for Axe so we may buy that item for 4200 gold and increase the range of Axe culling blade.pngCulling Blade for 1.5 times.

Late game

Late game for Axe (from 35 minute)

After minute 35 benefit that we bring for our team won’t be less but it will be harder to kill enemies alone that is why you should be close to your team and initiate team fights when that is possible. You should activate blink dagger and go to the pack of enemies, use Axe berserkers call.pngBerserker's Call there and try to hit some creeps too to give Counter Helix more chances. If some enemies will still be alive slay them with Axe culling blade.pngCulling Blade. But do not forget to analyze the situation: do not kill everybody if your carry may do that.

Heart of TarrasqueHeart of Tarrasque or/and Assault CuirassAssault Cuirass – the items that will be great if you can allow yourself to buy them. Tons of health and armor will make you almost immortal.

We need to sell Tranquil BootsTranquil Boots and get Boots of TravelBoots of Travel because we need mobility in the end of the game.
